Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat and add tea bags.
Cover and steep for 15 minutes.
Strain through a fine-mesh sieve; discard the tea bags and spices.

Return the spiced tea to the pan and reheat until warm.
Stir in rum (or bourbon), honey and lemon juice, if using.
Divide between 2 warmed mugs and serve immediately.
(Alternatively, serve each mug with a lemon wedge for squeezing in juice to taste.)
